The Loop Issue Twenty-Two

Letter from the Editor

Things looking a little different? Well, The Loop just got a whole new look.

A common theme in fashion is reinvention–adjusting a brand, style, or trend to flow alongside cultural shifts and the ever-changing fashion landscape. That’s what the MFMS is doing right now and always: evolving, creating and breaking molds. With that, welcome to the newest edition of The Loop! While keeping fashion-lovers up to date, we’re also providing a glimpse into upcoming trends, new designers and stylish sustainability. Each week you’ll also see MFMS’s top picks, from skincare to snow boots.

As always, the MFMS thanks each one of you for your support and interest as we continue to cultivate the next generation of creative leaders and provide the leading fashion career resource to students at the University of Michigan.

With love,

IN THE NEWS:

Trump’s Impending Impact on Fashion’s Global Sourcing

Textile manufacturers across Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa are preparing for the worst, as new tariffs proposed by the Trump administration may radically alter trade flows. The proposition calls for a new universal tariff between 10% and 20% on all imports into the states, with an additional 60% on imports from China. Trump’s threats also include a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada, which could put the U.S. Textile trade at risk. Brands in the U.S. are attempting to restructure their supply chains by diversifying their supplier base as a precautionary measure.

TREND WATCH:

The 12 hour TikTok ban

Just one hour before midnight on Saturday, January 19th, the long-anticipated TikTok ban was implemented in the United States. But just after 12 hours, the platform announced that service was back up and running for U.S. users. However, the app’s reinstatement may not be permanent, as the president has limited power on pausing a law passed by Congress and backed by the Supreme Court. Millions of creators depend on TikTok as a livelihood–relying on programs like the TikTok creator fund and monetized shopping links for income–and are anxiously awaiting further news on the status of the ban.

TREND WATCH:  The Retro Accessory Revival

The retro accessory revival is upon us, and we’re here for it. Blending nostalgia with a modern twist, this revival pulls bold design elements from the late 90’s, embraces the use of hardware and metallics and emphasizes styling basic outfits with accessories. We’re talking studded purses, shoe charms, funky glasses and vintage watches.  Cultural icon Hailey Bieber’s oval MiuMiu glasses spurred a burst in the trend’s popularity, but several other influencers and small creators have found affordable alternatives while staying fashionable.

STYLE SPOTLIGHT:

Let us introduce you to your new obsession: The Hirshleifers. Lori and Marci Hirshleifer are descendants of a fashion dynasty–their family’s 100 year old store has grown into a global luxury mecca. Lori and her niece, Marci, began posting on Tiktok and immediately captivated Gen Z with their fun, eccentric take on fashion. Their style reflects a seamless blend of streetwear, high fashion and basic staples, but their stacked jewelry looks are truly showstopping. The key to their style success is incorporating different elements into their looks, accessorizing even the simplest of outfits to put the perfect cherry on top. “We love accessories–the color and brightness–it really makes you who you are,” said Lori in an interview with Violet Grey. Three words to describe the pair? Chic, cool, and SO badass.
